This article describes the efforts and programs of the Middle Tennessee State University Police Department (MTSUPD) that have helped it to obtain the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies' Certificate.
Abstract
One of the MTSUPD efforts is the new Crime Stoppers group, which facilitates the sharing of information on campus crime among various public safety agencies. The group is composed of representatives from universities and colleges in and around the middle Tennessee area, both public and private. Every month this group shares information on what types of crimes have been occurring in their jurisdictions and who has been committing them. The sharing of this information has helped in the apprehension of certain criminals who may move from university to university to commit crimes. In the wake of the rape of a student at a bus stop, the MTSUPD purchased two golf carts for the purposes of patrol and escorts. Driven by uniformed students, the carts are used to drive students to various sites on campus during the hours of 5 pm to 1 am. The carts escort, on average, 20 to 25 people a night. The carts are also used for parking control during major campus events. In addition to the new golf cart escort program, the department has gone online to keep more students informed about campus public safety issues. All of the police officers also have their own e-mail address, so students can send an e-mail note directly to any officer. The department has completed the necessary paper work and passed the on-site inspections necessary to achieve accreditation.
