This book provides 11 chapters designed to add to the reader's understanding of factors that contribute to juvenile substance abuse as well as nonuse, drug policies that serve the needs of youth, and drug prevention and treatment for juveniles.
Abstract
Chapter 1 outlines the social history of these selected substances: tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and heroin. The subsequent two chapters identify and discuss individual and family factors that contribute to substance misuse, together with the resiliency factors that enable individuals to avoid substance misuse as a response to stressful circumstances. Community and peer factors are investigated as well. From these building blocks, two chapters examine adolescent substance misuse in urban and rural settings. The pharmacological effects of selected substances are discussed in another chapter, followed by a chapter that explores the current approaches used to treat substance-misusing youth. Then two chapters examine the current effectiveness of prevention efforts and a format for and the likely consequences of drug legalization. In the concluding chapter, the lead editor presents his perception of the themes that emerged from the book. He notes that together the chapters urge readers to pay greater attention to the multiple harms people inflict on one another at every micro and macro psycho- socioeconomic level. For individual chapters, see NCJ-162487-97. Chapter references and a subject index
