The authors describe a comprehensive prevention program designed to stop bullying in elementary schools; the goal of the program is to create a safer school environment by building a school culture that does not tolerate acts of physical or psychological aggression.
Abstract
Five key groups must be involved when implementing a comprehensive program to prevent bullying: teachers and other staff, students, bullies, victims, and parents. Children will report bullying if they know school staff will intervene effectively, and the first step in implementing a bullying intervention program is to adequately train all school staff. An inservice program is described that focuses on bullying, particularly physical aggression. The program identifies common myths about bullying, explores different types of bullying behaviors, and examines long-term consequences of bullying for both bullies and victims. The program also emphasizes building a cohesive school team, the use of peer conflict scenarios in group sessions to train school staff in how to intervene effectively, and actual classroom interventions that empower children to stand up to bullies. Children are taught specific skills they can employ to prevent bullying and steps they can take if they see someone being bullied. 8 references and 4 tables
