The paper compares public and private sources of funding and lists the advantages and disadvantages of each. General characteristics of four types of foundations are described, together with the kinds of information needed on private foundations and sources of information on private foundations, corporations, and associations. A section on grantsmanship includes a model and a timetable for proposal development; major components in a proposal to foundations and corporations, and to State and Federal agencies; examples of sources of information for idea refinement, sources of statistical data; and procedural suggestions.
