This manual presents guidelines and forms for the truancy and dropout prevention program developed for the schools in Richmond, Va.
Abstract
More than half of the school system's 27,000 students receive free lunch and require public transportation. The Richmond Public Schools intensified its dropout prevention efforts during the 1989-90 school year; the school/community dropout prevention and recovery efforts have reversed the high dropout rate, enhanced the quality of education, and reduced the number of at-risk students. The seven systemwide approaches and incentives include a comprehensive attendance plan, a program called Youth Experiencing Success, alternative programs for at-risk students from kindergarten through grade 12, a truancy prevention plan, a high school- based general equivalency diploma preparation program, community involvement, and an evaluation plan.
