This report presents statistics on inmate populations across New York State, New York City, and county correctional facilities in New York from 1981 through 1992.
Abstract
State correctional facilities had a total of 61,159 inmates in November 1992, an increase of 6 percent over the previous year. New York City Department of Correction Facilities housed 20.164 individuals on the same date, a decrease of 8 percent from the previous year, while local county jails and penitentiaries had 12,325 inmates, a decrease of 1 percent. The total county inmate capacity was 21,849 for New York City and 14,030 for upstate New York in December 1992, while occupancy was 84 percent for the city and 85 percent for upstate New York. Additional data present sentenced and unsentenced admissions to jails, penitentiaries, prisons, and lockups; inmate deaths from suicide, AIDS, natural causes, and homicide in State and local correctional facilities.
