This report presents statistics on inmate populations across New York State, New York City, and county correctional facilities in New York from 1982 through 1994.
Abstract
State correctional facilities had a total of 66,639 inmates in November 1994, an increase of 4 percent over the previous year. New York City Department of Correction Facilities housed 19,448 individuals on the same date, an increase of 5 percent from the previous year, while local county jails and penitentiaries had 13,929 inmates, an increase of 10 percent. The total county inmate capacity was 19,028 for New York City and 15,790 for upstate New York in December 1994, while occupancy was 100.5 percent for the city and 85.2 percent for upstate New York. Additional data present sentenced and unsentenced admissions to jails, penitentiaries, prisons, and lockups; inmate deaths from suicide, AIDS, natural causes, and homicide in State and local correctional facilities.
