Data categories include the following: Total Population in Custody; Accommodation; Remand Population and Male Remand Population; Sentenced Population and Sentenced Adult Male Population; Male Young Offenders; Sentenced Male Young Offenders; Sentenced Female Population; and Sentenced Population by Type Of Offense, by Ethnic Origin, Sex, and Nationality. The average population in custody (including those in police cells) was 51,000, the highest level ever. The sentenced population rose by 3,300 to 39,100, the largest rise for 25 years. The average female prison population rose by 9 percent to 1,980, its highest level ever. Females accounted for almost four percent of the total number in prison. There were 8,800 people from ethnic minorities in the prison population in June 1995, 69 percent of whom were of British nationality. Figures, tables, notes
