Projects completed have pertained to types of violent crime, a study of the Grendon Prison (a therapeutic prison), the circumstances of and offender choices in armed robberies, racial incidents in prison, parole evaluation, and presentencing stages of the criminal justice system. Current research is focusing on witnesses with learning disabilities, victimization in prisons, offender assessments and allocation decisions in the probation service, the death penalty, community supervision of offenders, and statutory responses to racially motivated crime in Europe. Other studies underway pertain to social order, criminal justice, and the appeal to community in Britain and Germany, as well as inter-generational differences in experiences of crime, fear of crime, and conceptions of justice. Another study is focusing on Colombian Women Prisoners in England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain. During 1994-95 plans were formulated to establish within the Centre a Probation Studies Unit. This unit will be an academically independent body committed to furthering the study of probation and related practices. Specific objectives of this unit are listed. Other Centre activities described encompass teaching, seminars, the Oxford Crime Forum, the library, visiting fellows and scholars, and publications and other activities of Centre members.
