Police officers in England and Wales stopped and searched 690,300 persons and/or vehicles in 1995, 20 percent more than in 1994.
Abstract
Resulting arrests increased by 15 percent, up from 70,300 in 1994 to 81,000 in 1995. During 1995, 12 percent of searches led to an arrest. The number of road checks significantly declined between 1994 and 1995, down from over 3,000 to 113. This was due primarily to loyalist and Irish Republican Army ceasefires. The number of persons detained for more than 24 hours and subsequently released without charge totaled 553 during 1995, compared to 465 during 1994. In 1995, 64 intimate searches were carried out, and Class A drugs were found in eight searches. Provisions and requirements of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act of 1984 and the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994 that pertain to police powers are noted. 13 notes, 5 tables, and 3 figures
