Sexual harassment in the workplace is discussed from the perspective of a public organization administrator, with emphasis on the various types of sexual harassment and recommended preventive and remedial actions.
Abstract
The nine types of sexual harassment include unwanted sexual advances, creation of a hostile environment, employee harassment of non-employees, and quid pro quo. Preventing sexual harassment may depend on the employer's ability to identify these different types and specify preventive measures that deal with the problems each type presents. Prevention measures include using the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission guidelines and case law to define and explain sexual harassment to employees, establishing a written sexual harassment policy, not ignoring complaints just because they are not formally filed, and not putting off taking action simply because an allegedly harassed employee asks that no action be taken. Remedial measures include establishing investigatory procedures to ensure that claims are resolved quickly, ensuring no retaliation against the complainant, presenting the findings in a confidential report, and providing followup care to victims.
