This report presents the proceedings of a 1994 conference on crime victim surveys in Australia.
Abstract
The symposium was attended by crime researchers from throughout Australia, representatives of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and other Federal agencies, and a leading international expert on crime victim surveys (Dr. Pat Mayhew of the British Home Office). The presentations address a variety of general issues pertinent to crime victim surveys and also focus on victimization statistics for particular offenses. General issues discussed are methodology in victimization surveys, the uses and abuses of crime victim surveys, the reliability of victim surveys, and the refinement of victim surveys. Various issues in surveys of particular types of victimization encompass robbery, assault, domestic violence, crimes against the person, rape, and crimes against businesses. Another paper compares crime levels and crime trends in South Australia, using crime surveys and police data. A paper compares victimization rates reported in the 1991 Queensland Crime Victims Survey and the 1993 National Crime and Safety Survey. Other issues addressed are non-response adjustments in the 1993 National Crime and Safety Survey, the future of the ABS Crime and Safety Survey, and an overview of victims of crime surveys for 1975-1995. Tables, figures, and references accompany the papers.
