A study of the privatization of adult correctional facilities in the United States revealed that correctional privatization movement is a highly competitive business and that the number of secure adult correctional facility contracts increased by 15.38 percent in 1995, from 88 to 104.
Abstract
The year began with 19 management firms and ended with 17, of which 15 have headquarters in the United States and two have headquarters in the United Kingdom. The combined market share of the 6 largest companies is nearly 90 percent. The rated capacity of secure adult facilities in operation or under construction increased 29.38 percent, from 49,154 to 63,595. The rated capacity of secure adult facilities in operation increased from 30,821 to 43,516. The use of available capacity in private facilities declined by 7.74 percent from 93.05 percent to 85.85 percent. The average capacity of private facilities increased by 9.47 percent to modestly above 600 prisoners. Figure and tables
