Abstract
The first chapter provides an overview of police dog operations for urban and rural areas, as well as statements by selected K-9 trainers and officers about the use of police dogs. A chapter on police dog program management addresses program design; legal preparation for police dog units; officer, dog, and team selection; initial training program; K-9 program implementation; tasking; and maintenance training. "Street" work is discussed in another chapter; it encompasses the following tasks: contact-cover, vehicle stops, robberies and burglaries in progress, fights, domestic disputes, pursuits, and SWAT operations. A chapter on finding offenders provides instruction in building searches, work in major metropolitan areas, work in rural areas, area searches, work in cities, and work in "back country." Remaining chapters focus on police dog uses in prison patrol, evidence search, drug search, search and rescue, bomb detection, and international service. 84-item bibliography and a subject index
