The UN General Assembly has strongly recommended that member countries become actively involved in implementing resolutions resulting from the Ninth UN Congress on Crime Prevention and the Treatment of Offenders. In addition, the UN General Assembly has requested the UN Secretary-General to strengthen cooperation between the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Division and the UN International Drug Control Program. The following areas are identified for possible cooperation: further elaboration of model drug legislation by incorporating appropriate UN criminal justice standards and norms; joint preparation of training manuals, taking into account the needs of different regions and legal traditions; input into training components of national projects; and enhanced information exchange. Cooperation and coordination are specifically recommended with respect to organized crime and money laundering aspects of drug trafficking. The role of UN bodies in protecting human rights, peacekeeping operations, training and development programs, and crime prevention and criminal justice programs is discussed. 2 notes
