This volume presents reports on drug abuse patterns and trends in 20 cities and 12 countries and regions, as well as recent research on drug prevention, drug dependence in the United States, and the relationship between drugs and violence.
Abstract
Data on cities and States came from the records of public health agencies, medical and treatment facilities, criminal justice and correctional offices, law enforcement agencies, and other sources unique to local areas. The 20 United States city reports are organized by specific drugs of abuse and include data on drug fatalities, treatment admissions, and drug arrests and seizures. The analysis of drug prevention concludes that an approach that teaches social resistance skills and an array of general life skills has demonstrated prevention effects with respect to tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use, as well as on hypothesized mediating variables. The analysis of drug dependence among adolescents and adults reveals that the same individual characteristics have different relationships to drug dependence in different geographical areas. Several studies being conducted in New York are focusing on the relationship of violence to drug use and drug distribution. Figures, tables, reference lists, and list of meeting participants
