Woodward Academy is a residential facility for delinquent males ages 13-17 and is located in Woodward, Iowa.
Abstract
The program mixes intensive prosocial behavior training with physical and confidence training, academic education, and vocational education within a positive peer environment. This structured program model combines a foundation of discipline, responsibility, and self-esteem through training and by confronting the young offenders' negative behavior and providing them with health alternatives. A drug treatment component uses the basic principles of the structured residential program with the addition of a drug treatment group 1 hour per day, 5 days a week. The Woodward program prepares youth for a comprehensive, ongoing aftercare schedule administered by juvenile court personnel, the Department of Human Services, or both. A care plan is developed and written for each student within 2 weeks of admission based on the information collected by the referral worker, information from the student's family, and the assessment tests completed throughout the week.
