Using video footage of on-the-scene program activities and interviews with community leaders and participants, this video profiles various community-based programs throughout the Nation that have helped prevent and reduce crime in specific neighborhoods.
Abstract
In one program, the police chief chose to live in a high- crime neighborhood and has provided leadership and a role model in helping the community to address crime problems and improve the quality of community life; incentives are offered for other police to live in high-crime neighborhoods. Another program is a model for an effective Neighborhood Watch program. A homeowner in each block patrols the block, and a neighborhood bulletin is published to make residents aware of crime and crime prevention measures. A program in a high-crime area of a metropolitan area was begun by a neighborhood couple to train local youth in significant career jobs. Another community has mounted a graffiti clean-up program; volunteers locate graffiti and use paint to cover it. Other programs described include a Safe House Program to improve the safety of children as they travel to and from school, a Public Nuisance Task Force that identifies sites in a community that attract crime and disorder and takes action to remove their influence, and a volunteer parent group that monitors children at bus stops and as they travel to and from school. Some crime prevention suggestions are also included in the video.
