SJI's mission includes awarding grants to improve the quality of justice in State courts across the Nation. SJI has five categories of grants. They are project grants to support innovations with nationwide impact; single jurisdiction grants, which include technical assistance grants; curriculum adaptation grants to support court adaptations of SJI-supported model training programs; scholarships to enable judges and court staff to attend education and training programs; and renewal grants to provide continuation or ongoing support for current projects. The manual includes 10 "special interest" categories of particular importance to the State courts in fiscal 1997. These categories are improving public confidence in the courts; education and training for judges and other key court personnel; dispute resolution and the courts; application of technology; court management, financing, and planning; resolution of current evidentiary issues; substance abuse and the courts; children and families in court; improving the courts' response to domestic violence and other gender-related crimes of violence; and the relationship between State and Federal courts. Other topics addressed in this manual are size of awards, concept-paper submission requirements for new projects, application requirements, application review procedures, renewal funding procedures, and compliance requirements.
