Contraband is a major problem in correctional facilities. Personnel are required to move inmates from their cells to the visiting area and supervising the visiting procedure. Brevard County installed a video visitation system. A building outside the jail contains 20 video booths, a control area, and an additional area where the public can view video arrangements. Similar booths are located near each housing pod in the jail. The system eliminates contraband, increases security, and reduces the personnel needed. Video systems are also being used by public defenders, informants, and court hearings. Unexpectedly, both the public and inmates have reacted favorably to the system. Courts have upheld the denial of contact visitation. The use of video technology in the criminal justice system is likely to increase. Photographs
