Building on the creation of an effective, unified administrative structure, the appellate system of the Judicial Branch has focused on developing a more extensive interaction with the legal and public communities that it serves and on attaining a more integrated relationship with the trial system. The search for greater interaction between the bar and the appellate system continued in 1993 when the Supreme Court authorized the Connecticut Law Journal to begin publication of summaries of cases originally filed in the Supreme Court or transferred to that court from the Appellate Court. Other activities pertinent to the appellate system were the formation of the Advisory Committee on Appellate Rules, the publication of a legal styles manual, the establishment of a commission to study court reporting services, and the holding of regional appellate conferences. A description of the work of the Civil Division of the Judicial Branch notes the undertaking of a comprehensive program to promote both private and "in court" alternative dispute resolution. The Criminal Division has focused on alternative incarceration programs, bail innovations, a risk assessment project, a technical violation of probation protocol, and the work of the Office of Victim Services. In the area of juvenile matters, the Judicial Branch has done work in alternatives to juvenile detention, juvenile justice centers, child support enforcement, and a parenting education program. This report also describes work done to enhance judicial administration. Caseload data show the number of cases filed for fiscal year 1992-93 and fiscal year 1993-94 for civil, small claims, criminal, family, juvenile, housing, and motor vehicle cases.
