Abstract
The issue shows how a subject of concern to member countries is brought to the attention of the commission and subsequently to two of the main policymaking bodies of the United Nations, the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly. Examples of issues dealt with by the commission are given, the organization and functions of the commission are described, and the development and continuity of work undertaken by the crime prevention and criminal justice program of the United Nations are illustrated. Subjects covered at the commission's third and fourth sessions are noted, including organized transnational crime, violence against women, crime prevention, treatment of offenders, protection of the environment by criminal law, illicit trafficking in minors, minimum rules for the administration of criminal justice, guidelines for the prevention of urban crime, technical cooperation and advisory services, and the United Nations Crime and Justice Information Network.
