This directory describes and provides information on 80 programs across Canada that are designed to provide police/school liaisons in preventing and countering youth violence.
Abstract
Police forces/detachments in approximately 500 communities across Canada were invited to provide descriptions of their school-based programs for inclusion in this directory; 80 responded. Each listing provides a description of the program, along with the name of a contact person and a mailing address to help facilitate networking. Information is also provided on the demographics of program sites, the target group, how long the program has been offered, funding, how programs are requested, the extent to which the program uses the same police officer every time at the same school, other partnerships, and available resources. The majority (73.4 percent) of communities offer both prevention and intervention program to schools. Most gear their programs to all grade levels, including elementary, middle-level, and high schools. Most of the responding police forces had not conducted any form of systematic evaluation of their programs, so the directory does not indicate which programs are having the most impact on violence prevention in schools. The directory and its companion document, "The Badge and the Book" (See NCJ- 165096), are intended for use by communities to help them plan, develop, or evolve their school-based police programs to promote safer schools and communities.
