The opening paper by former White House drug czar Robert DuPont analyzes and opposes harm reduction proposals such as the medical use of marijuana and needle exchanges for intravenous drug users to reduce AIDS transmission. Seven additional papers critique this analysis and variously conclude that it should be modified, rejected, or supported. Further papers focus on the factors that influence needle-bleaching intentions and behaviors among intravenous drug users who share injection paraphernalia, the acquisition and maintenance of safer sexual behaviors among injection drug users, challenges in evaluating harm reduction approaches to drug abuse, and harm reduction for problems related to alcohol use by college students.
