Abstract
The 1996 session of the State General Assembly changes sentencing law related to assault inflicting serious bodily injury, assault on a firefighter, burning or bombing a religious building, and other offenses. The Sentencing Commission introduced a package of recommendations to the 1996 General Assembly; three of the eight proposals were enacted. Corrections revealed that North Carolina led the country with a 24-percent increase in its prison population from 1994 to 1995. The Structured Sentencing Issues Subcommittee of the Sentencing Commission has been developing proposals to revise and improve the Structured Sentencing Act. The Post-Release Supervision and Community Corrections Subcommittee has been developing recommendations for amending the post-release supervision provisions of the Structured Sentencing Act and amending the Sentencing Commission's comprehensive community corrections strategy.
