The lead paper summarizes the work of 43 theorists in the drug field, classifying drug abuse theories according to relationships with self, others, society, and nature. In comparing theories and disciplines, the need for a multidisciplinary theory of drug use and abuse and the complexity of existing models that explain drug abuse are emphasized. Other papers address controversial issues associated with drug use, place drug abuse research in a developmental-historical context, and present insights on the social context in which young people use drugs.
