Abstract
In 1996 the Judicial Council recommended four new judgeships, introduced computer bulletin board and e-mail capabilities to the Louisiana judiciary, used technology-based tools to help trial courts operate more efficiently and give courts and legislators quick access to accurate statistical data, and surveyed courts to determine needs. The Judicial Administrator's Office supports and staffs the work of the Judicial Council and is the administrative office and fiscal agent for the Louisiana Supreme Court. The scope of the Judicial Administrator's Office has broadened with the innovations, policies, and reforms being instituted by the Louisiana Supreme Court. The Law Library of Louisiana works closely with judges, law clerks, and judicial administrators as researchers and organizers of information. This year's report focuses on the library's technology, print materials, and educational exhibits. The Louisiana Judicial College has launched a mentoring project, whereby experienced mentors guide and nurture new judges in the pursuit of judicial excellence. The Judiciary Commission of Louisiana received and docketed 355 complaints against judges and justices of the peace in 1996. Statistics on case processing and dispositions are presented for the Supreme Court, courts of appeal, district courts, and city and parish courts. Three-year trends are shown. Rosters of judges and court clerks are provided as well.
