Annotation: OVERVIEW OF THE THEORETICAL ORIENTATION OF CRIMINOLOGY IN ARGENTINA AND SOME CURRENT CHALLENGES TO ITS PRACTICAL APPLICATION IN THE FACE OF RISING LEVELS OF CRIME.
Abstract: CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIZING IN ARGENTINA DEVELOPED AN INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE AND METHODOLOGY WITHOUT BEING EXCESSIVELY INFLUENCED BY EITHER LEGAL OR SOCIOLOGICAL THINKING. RECENTLY HOWEVER, THERE HAS BEEN A TENDENCY TO NEGLECT THE IMPORTANCE OF LEGAL NORMS IN FAVOR OF A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE. ANOTHER CHARACTERISTIC OF ARGENTINE CRIMINOLOGY HAS BEEN INDETERMINISM - THE IDEA THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE SCIENTIFICALLY OBJECTIVE WHEN STUDYING HUMAN BEHAVIOR. IN RECENT YEARS SOCIAL CHANGES HAVE BROUGHT ABOUT CRIME PROBLEMS WHICH CANNOT BE ACCOUNTED FOR BY THE TRADITIONAL CRIMINOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK. AMONG THESE PROBLEMS ARE JUVENILE OFFENSES OF VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, DRUG ABUSE, AUTO THEFT, AND SUBVERSIVE VIOLENCE AGAINST THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL ORDER. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE INTER-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ON CRIMINOLOGY IN 1971. --IN SPANISH
