This volume provides a comprehensive overview of recent research into the causes, prevalence, and prevention of childhood sexual abuse and exposes many popular myths about the subject.
Abstract
The book first reviews the literature concerning types of sexual abuse, causes, perpetrators, prevention, false memories, cult and satanic abuse, and other relevant topics. This is followed by a chapter that provides a chronology of the significant events relevant to issues surrounding childhood sexual abuse. Another chapter provides biographical sketches of individuals who have played or are currently playing key roles in the area of childhood sexual abuse, followed by a chapter that provides statistical information on the prevalence and incidence of child sexual abuse, as well as excerpts from Federal laws and U.S. Supreme Court decisions in this area. The book also provides a directory of private and public organizations, associations, and government agencies that are involved in treating children who have been sexually abused, as well as those that treat offenders. Books, handbooks, manuals, and periodicals are annotated; the literature varies from popular accounts to primary research and provides a wide perspective on the problem. The concluding chapter contains an annotated list of nonprint resources, including films and videocassettes.
