A 58-year-old man was found dead with three gunshot wounds to the head, and postmortem examination showed all entry wounds were contact range.
Abstract
This observation was supported by subsequent firearms residue analysis, and it was found that only one of the wound tracks penetrated the brain. Findings and information gathered by the police and coroner at the scene and circumstances of the death confirmed the manner of death as suicide. The author concludes that multiple gunshot suicides initially raise the suspicion of homicide and that a systematic approach by the police, coroners, and pathologists is needed to reach the conclusion of death by suicide. Indications of suicidal intent, a history of depression and personal difficulties, and proximity of the firearm to the body can assist in determining cause of death. 13 references and 2 figures
