Crime in Oregon increased 4.8 percent in 1995 compared to 1994; crime increased in 26 of the 36 counties in the State. Crime in the five major populated counties reported 60.3 percent of the total crime in the State and 64.3 percent of the crimes against persons. Crimes against persons increased 0.3 percent from 1994 to 1995; robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault all reported increases. Decreases were reported in willful homicide, negligent homicide, rape, other sex crimes, and kidnapping. There were six fewer bank robberies reported in 1995 compared to 1994. Crimes against property increased 5.9 percent from 1994 to 1995. Burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, forgery/counterfeiting, fraud, embezzlement, and stolen property offenses and vandalism all had reported increases. Behavioral crimes increased 4.4 percent from the previous year. Weapons offenses, prostitution, drug laws, gambling, offenses against family, drunk driving, "all other," and curfew all reported increases. Decreases were reported in liquor law violations, disorderly conduct, and runaways. The Index crime rate for 1995 was 666.5 crimes per 10,000 population, a 4.7-percent increase from 1994. The total number of arrests for the State was 163,925, an increase of 6.4 percent from the previous year.
