These articles describe four correctional programs in Missouri: the shock incarceration program of the Missouri Department of Corrections, the Marion County Jail and Law Enforcement Center, the Boone County Detention Facility, and the Cape Girardeau County Jail.
Abstract
The Special Alternative Incarceration is a 90-day condition for being granted probation. It uses a behavior modification system in a program of strict discipline; hard labor; physical training; and participation in supportive programs in education, group counseling, drug abuse counseling, and stress management. The model has both advantages and disadvantages. To use this model successfully, Missouri should establish a task force, a review board, and a support group to improve communications within the community. The Marion County Jail and Law Enforcement Center opened in December 1992. It uses indirect supervision to permit minimal staffing for its capacity of 85 inmates. The facility will pay for itself by housing prisoners from nearby jurisdictions. The Boone County Detention Facility has a capacity of 184 inmates and protects its four pods through a modern fire protection system. The facility has a detailed fire evacuation plan and procedure. the Cape Girardeau County Jail is a 65-bed facility built in 1979. A regional jail facility is planned to relieve overcrowding and house prisoners from surrounding counties as well as State and Federal prisoners. Photographs
