Some of the five papers in this volume focus on issues related to etiology while others are more related to prevention. Although considerable research has been conducted in recent years, most has been conducted in school settings; has involved white, middle-class populations; and has focused on cigarette smoking. The individual papers in this book address the following subjects: (1) the generalizability to inner-city minority youth of a prevention approach previously found effective on white youth; (2) the role of ethnic identity as a moderator of psychosocial risk for alcohol and marijuana use; (3) the conceptual foundation for extending to the community prevention methods found effective in school settings; (4) the extent to which the conditions of public housing may affect the etiology of drug abuse; and (5) the factors promoting drug abuse in youth living in shelters for homeless families.
