The Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Computer Information Center (NCIC) is revamping its computer system to change the current teletype-compatible system into a stand-alone personal computer (PC) system running Microsoft Windows.
Abstract
The NCIC system is being developed to run on Microsoft Windows 3.1 versus Windows 95 which makes the system already obsolete. Further, Microsoft is trying to move everyone to Windows NT, a true 32-bit operating system that is more stable than Windows 95. The only drawback is that Windows NT does not run 16-bit applications. For these reasons, the NCIC system should be developed for a 32-bit operating system that will be around in 1999 rather than for a 16-bit operating system that is already outdated. The NCIC system will have certain enhancements, for example, the capability of being transmitted to patrol officers on the street, single-finger fingerprint matching, new databases such as a convicted persons file, and access to secondary databases such as the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Problems in developing the NCIC system are still being worked out, and recommendations have been formulated to improve system applications. 1 photograph
