The Montana Attorney General's Task Force on Youth Violence examined the issue of youth violence from both statistical and individual perspectives and recommended community-oriented rather than legislative solutions to solve the problem.
Abstract
The task force identified promising strategies to strengthen families and the community response to violence, based on meetings with students, teachers, parents, and concerned citizens in seven Montana communities. The task force focused on what it could do to educate communities about youth violence and how it could assist them in developing solutions. The task force reviewed community action and collaboration among schools, law enforcement, citizen groups, tribes, and others concerned with a healthy community. The task force concluded that strong partnerships at both State and local levels can prevent youth violence and that special concerns such as guns, gangs, and alcohol and other drug use should be addressed in youth violence prevention initiatives. Appendixes provide additional information on violent crimes involving Montana youth and on promising violence prevention strategies. References and figures
