The Parenting Program teaches inmate mothers coping skills, how to interpret their children's behaviors, how to administer positive discipline, and how to give direction from a distance. The program emphasizes the importance of the mothers' development of healthy relationships with their families, as well as with the caretakers of their children. The inmate mothers learn how to practice, demonstrate, and apply with their children what they have learned in the program. The program is designed to be conducted by a Parenting Coordinator. It consists of eight classes of 2 hours each, with a half-hour discussion group following each class. The manual contains a teacher's guide that outlines the objectives, general questions/ideas, and activities of each class, along with other instructional materials. A Parent's Manual provides a variety of information to inmate mothers on the philosophy and skills of parenting. Other materials in this manual include a class on puppet-making and puppet shows, the parenting skills curriculum, a course on long distance parenting, a health services curriculum, a drug education class, a psychology services curriculum, and a pastoral care curriculum. Forms, resources, and suggested readings are included as well.
