This document presents the agenda and background materials for a conference held in 1996 and focusing on conflict resolution in disputes that focus on children and are located in families, schools, and communities.
Abstract
The conference focused on youth violence, youth mediation programs, the effective involvement of students and parents in the innovative resolution of school discipline cases, mediation in child abuse and neglect cases, and conflict resolution education for youth. Additional topics included juvenile victim-offender mediation, mediation in juvenile detention and correctional institutions, the use of mediation in addressing hateful speech and gang issues, the mediation of custody disputes among parents, and the mediation of parent-child disputes. Further topics included youth peer mediation; the ethics of conflict resolution in children, youth, and family cases; the use of teen courts; the enhancement of community relationships between children and police; issues of cultural competency; and the use of family group conferences in juvenile cases in New Zealand.
