The Certificate in Police Leadership is a distance education program offered by the Centre for Public Management at Henson College, Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Abstract
In its second year of operation, the program is increasingly being recognized as a valuable professional development resource. Designed for police personnel with supervisory or middle management experience, the first level of the course is comprised of police leadership and management development and communication skills for police personnel. The second level of the course involves topics related to community-based policing and budgeting and fiscal management for police services. The author notes that distance education is turning out to be the method of choice in adult education programs. Because of its flexibility, the method is particularly suitable for full-time professionals, especially if they are involved in shiftwork. Students can remain in their regular work environment and apply new skills and theories as they are acquired.
