This article describes the Verification and Information System (VIS), A Dutch database to prevent and detect forms of abuse of identity cards.
Abstract
One of the aims of the VIS is to prevent the abuse of identity documents. This is done by guaranteeing the reliability of uniquely numbered documents and security papers that are issued in the Netherlands and by diminishing the risk of abuse of false/forged documents and security paper and making them unattractive to potential offenders. VIS serves the police, special investigation services, border control services, and Dutch embassies and consulates throughout the world. VIS also aims at contributing to the prevention and suppression of the misuse of false and forged documents and security papers, so as to limit losses as much as possible. VIS is an extensive system, which can still be expanded further. All uniquely numbered material can be included. 2 references
