This report presents data on U.S. adult correctional systems, probation and parole, and jail systems for 1996 and the early part of 1997.
Abstract
The data were compiled from a survey questionnaire mailed to State and Federal correctional agencies in the United States and Correctional Service of Canada, to probation and parole agencies in the United States and the Canadian National Parole Board, and to jail systems in the United States that housed over 200 inmates. Completed questionnaires were submitted by correctional agencies from all 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Correctional Service of Canada. Probation and Parole System questionnaires were submitted by 18 probation agencies, 18 parole agencies, and 34 probation and parole agencies from the United States, the District of Columbia, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, the U.S. Parole Commission, and the Canadian National Parole Board. Data were submitted by 123 jail systems, which included 293 jails in 32 States. Data on U.S. adult correctional systems, probation and parole, and jail systems are divided into topics related to populations, facilities, budgets, programs, and staff. Data on populations include offender characteristics, inmates classified to each custody level, inmate deaths, inmates released, and court orders and lawsuits filed in adult correctional agencies. Budgets are for fiscal year 1997. Extensive tables and figures
