Forty papers address various aspects of the role and work of psychologists employed by police departments.
Abstract
Eight papers are included in a section that focuses on "Organizational Concerns." These papers address the following topics: organizational factors in police occupational stress, strategic planning and proactive management, the police department as an addictive organizational system, alternative dispute resolution as an organizational aid to law enforcement, dealing with problem police employees, organizational health consultation, and a cognitive-behavioral program to reduce sexual harassment in law enforcement. Five papers discuss aspects of "Police Psychology." Among the topics considered in this section are organizational and management issues pertinent to the psychological health of undercover operatives, police psychologists and organizational compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and overcoming administrative and employee resistance in the establishment of an agency therapy program. The five papers in the section on "The Psychologist Within the Organization" focus on gaining departmental acceptance, the influence of a counseling-oriented psychological services program on the organization, matchmaking between police psychologists and their departments, recommended attributes for the successful organization consultant, and the establishment of a departmental "wellness" program. Seven papers deal with issues pertinent to "Trauma and Treatment," and four papers discuss issues pertinent to "Violence in the Workplace" (the police department). Three papers address the police psychologist's role in community- oriented policing; and five papers discuss future issues in police psychology. Tables and references accompany the papers.
