The Ninth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders was held from April 29, 1995 to May 8, 1995 and was attended by 1,899 participants from 138 countries, 15 intergovernmental organizations, 48 nongovernmental organizations, and 22 United Nations agencies and programs.
Abstract
Major issues discussed included transnational organized crime and terrorism, international cooperation and technical assistance, urban and juvenile crime, police and court reform, and the mass media and crime prevention. Additional topics included environmental protection, extradition, urban policy, violence prevention, computerization of criminal justice systems, and corruption of public officials. Related meetings at the event focused on alternatives to violence, correctional personnel training, drug laws, prison standards, urban juvenile delinquency, life imprisonment, and youth involvement in crime control. They also discussed immigration and crime, national crime prevention councils, children in situations involving war and community violence, restorative justice, the prosecutor's role, foreign prisoners, psychological victimization effects, and United Nations peacekeeping operations.
