Objectives of the High-Risk Youth National Public Awareness Campaign, developed by the National School Safety Center, are to enhance public safety by reducing the risks of intentional injury associated with juvenile crime and delinquency and to empower high-risk youth to become law-abiding, drug-free, productive citizens.
Abstract
The High-Risk Youth Practicum reviews and synthesizes research and commentary from authorities on juvenile crime and delinquency and uses this knowledge to validate and outline a comprehensive public awareness and education campaign and to propose strategies that will positively change attitudes and actions of both high-risk youth and youth in the general population as they relate to crime, delinquency, and drug abuse. The High-Risk Youth Practicum contains a variety of materials prepared by organizations and individuals associated with programs to turn young people away from criminal behavior. Specific topics concern school safety, school-based social competence promotion, health promotion, violence prevention, illegal drug use by juveniles, students at risk, crime causes, the role of families and peers in juvenile delinquency, and youth in custody.
