Managers are increasingly challenged to devise new and effective methods of protecting employees at the workplace. Safety problems include: threats, ranging from computer sabotage to acts of violence, from disgruntled or disturbed employees; domestic violence including stalking; acts of domestic terrorism; and the more typical threats of violence such as assaults, robberies and rapes. In most instances, managers cannot control the behavior of others, but they can work to ensure some degree of control in the work environment. They might attempt to: (1) develop office policies that address safety issues; (2) create sound and effective hiring and termination practices; (3) provide access to Employee Assistance Programs; (4) develop a threat management team; (5) provide safety training for employees and supervisors; and (6) create a work environment that communicates mutual trust and respect. Technological advances such as security screening devices will boost workplace safety, but managers' continuing efforts to encourage employees' sound and effective safety practices at the workplace will still be critical.
