Statistics on arrests for drug law offenses in Wisconsin in 1996 are presented, together with data on trends from previous years.
Abstract
Total drug arrests increased by 6.8 percent from 1995, much less than both the 1995 increase of 19.2 percent and the 1994 increase of 32.3 percent. Arrests for drug sales increased by 8.5 percent in 1996. Arrests for drug possession arrests increased by 6.3 percent. Arrests involving opium or cocaine increased by 11.2 percent; those involving marijuana increased by 9.2 percent. Eighty-five percent of those arrested were male. Adult drug arrests increased by 6.3 percent and juvenile arrests by 8.8 percent in 1996. The type of drug was strongly related to the race of the person arrests. A total of 79.4 percent of those arrested for marijuana violations were white persons, while 65.1 percent of those arrested for opium or cocaine violations were black persons. The total number of arrests for drug law offenses increased by 87.7 percent from 1992 to 1996. Tables, figures, and appended additional findings
