This report presents statistics on crimes, arrests, and police in Texas in 1994, as well as data on crime trends since 1976.
Abstract
The crime data came from the Uniform Crime Reporting program. An estimated 1,079,340 index offenses occurred in Texas in 1994, a decrease of 7 percent from 1993. The State had 9,868 cases of arson, a decrease of 2.5 percent from 1993. The crime rate was 5,873 crimes per 100,000 persons, a decrease of 8.8 percent from the previous year. The numbers of crimes peaked in the summer months of July and August. The State had an estimated 128,842 violent crimes, a 5.5-percent decrease from 1993. The violent crime rate was 706.5 crimes per 100,000 persons, a 7.3-percent decline from the 1993 rate. Property crimes decreased 7.2 percent and the property crime rate decreased 9 percent from 1993. Law enforcement officers cleared 23 percent of all reported index offenses, including 50 percent of violent crimes and 19 percent of property crimes. Persons under age 18 accounted for 11 percent of all violent crime clearances and 21 percent of property crime clearances. Three law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty, and 4,917 assaults on officers were reported. Tables, figures, and appended methodological information and glossary
