This statistical profile of crime includes 75 U.S. cities that have been cited in various magazine surveys as being the best places to live and work, and data cover the 1977-1996 period.
Abstract
Statistics are compiled for all major crime categories: violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault), property crime (burglary, larceny, theft, and motor vehicle theft), and total crime. Each table compares crime rates for the city, suburbs, and metropolitan area. Graphs showing crime trends are included for violent, property, and total crime to give the user an added perspective from which to study crime. The statistical profile also contains data on hate crimes, illegal drugs, correctional facilities, shock incarceration programs, curfews, inmates and HIV/AIDS, the death penalty, law enforcement personnel, anti-crime programs, and victimization. All crimes covered in the statistical profile are index crimes defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting Program. The statistical profile of each city is organized as follows: overview, anti-crime programs, crime statistics, hate crimes, law enforcement, corrections, death penalty, and laws. Appendixes define metropolitan statistical areas and different crimes types covered in the statistical profile and list city police departments. Tables and figures
