A BRIEF OUTLINE OF AN INDIVIDUALIZED READING PROGRAM WHICH UTILIZES A CONTRACT SYSTEM AND PROVIDES A PAPERBACK LIBRARY FOR INMATES AND AUDIO VISUAL MATERIALS TO PREPARE FOR THE GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TEST.
Abstract
THE BASIC AIMS OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AT CHESHIRE ARE TO IMPROVE THE STUDENT'S SELF IMAGE, TO HELP THE STUDENT COMPLETE SUCCESSFUL EXPERIENCES IN AN ACADEMIC SITUATION, AND TO PROVIDE INSTRUCTION IN THE BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY TO EVERYDAY LIFE. INITIAL TESTING IS USED TO ESTABLISH AN APPROXIMATE READING LEVEL FOR EACH STUDENT. WHEN THE STUDENT ATTENDS CLASS SESSIONS, HE IS GIVEN AN INDIVIDUALIZED CONTRACT CONTAINING A LIST OF AT LEAST 10 ACTIVITIES DEALING WITH READING, FROM WHICH HE MUST CHOOSE EIGHT. UPON COMPLETION OF THE CONTRACT, A NEWER AND MORE DIFFICULT ONE IS ASSIGNED. AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS FOR THE COURSE ARE SUPPLIED BY A NEARBY PUBLIC LIBRARY. ALSO, MEN PREPARING TO TAKE THE GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TEST ARE PROVIDED WITH AN INTENSIVE COURSE OF INSTRUCTION IN SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE, MATH, ENGLISH AND READING.
