This documentary video profiles the drug addiction of an adult married couple and some high school students, the effects of this addiction, and the treatment techniques and effects.
Abstract
A married couple talks about their heroin addiction, and their young son shares his feelings about his parents' addiction and his hopes and goals for the future. The parent's methadone maintenance treatment is also described, as is a parenting instruction program. At the time of the interview, the wife/mother is no longer using heroin, but the husband has not been as successful; he is unable to hold a job, and the wife is supporting the family by working in a bagel shop. The son loves his parents but is frustrated by his father's dependence on heroin. The profiles of the students who are abusing drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, involve their comments on their family life, their behavior patterns under the influence of drugs, and the difficulty in attempting to stop using drugs. A drug counseling program in the Dade County schools (Florida) is described. It not only includes information on drugs and their effects but provides instruction in life skills and in dealing with factors that may contribute to drug abuse.
