This booklet is intended to help YouthBuild and similar programs targeting young people diversify their funding sources and to provide the information needed to explore all potential sources of Federal funding.
Abstract
Many YouthBuild programs have been started largely with local and private funds, but most have also obtained substantial support from different Federal agencies. Tips on seeking Federal funding are offered to help YouthBuild organizations identify programs that meet their needs. Federal programs most frequently used by YouthBuild programs are listed, and new or special funding sources are identified. Specific funding sources within the Department of Justice, the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Health and Human Services are described. Funding available from government-sponsored enterprises and other miscellaneous agencies is also noted. YouthBuild programs are examined that focus on such areas as job training and job opportunities, community development, assistance for homeless persons, drug-free schools, opportunities for out-of-school youth, juvenile gangs, juvenile drug abuse, community outreach, and runaway and homeless youth, Appendixes contain information on the Federal budget process, a glossary, a list of local directors of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and a list of community investment officers of the Federal Home Loan Bank system.
